Though our next alumni spotlight isn’t a UNI graduate, he is someone close to all of our hearts. Tom Barton, is a name that every Iowa Theta brother knows and loves, Tom helped create our chapter and deserves every bit of our gratitude. Tom now lives in Dubuque, Iowa and is the founder and president of Barton Wealth Management. Tom has a wife, Barb, and two kids, Matt (Currently serving as our VP of Programming) and Katie. Graduating from Loras College in 1989, Tom has a degree in English Education. Tom served as Social and Public Relations Chairman during his time in SigEp.
When asked about SigEp Tom had this to say, ”I was orphaned at 13, having spent my entire life below the poverty line with my single mom. SigEp raised me. SigEp changes lives. It’s changed your life or you wouldn’t be reading this right now. It’s all our responsibility to give back to IA Theta through our time, talent, and treasure.”
How has SigEp helped you since graduating?
It changed my life by introducing me to goal setting, time management, and most importantly, THINKING BIG. My national SigEp peers planted the seed to make the shift from education to the brokerage world. I was mentored by several top-shelf successful guys, including Mark Davis, who was the SigEp national expansion director who brought SigEp to UNI, along with Regional Director Ari Rosenbaum. Both those guys are good friends to this day.
What is your favorite memory from your time an undergrad in SigEp?
Winning SigEp Loras’ 7th straight Buchanan Cup at the 1989 Carlson Leadership Academy in St. Louis, MO.
What is your favorite memory from your time as an alumnus in SigEp?
The day my son Matt became a SigEp at UNI.
Why did you join SigEp?
I wanted a positive connection to the campus.
Why did you stay in SigEp?
I was truly challenged to be better than I was. It was a great opportunity to learn project management, leadership, and professional skills in addition to the incredible brotherhood.
